Welcome message from Lindiwe Rakharebe, Durban ICC CEO

27 June 2017 by Durban ICC

Welcome to this next edition of the Durban ICC’s Sanibonani newsletter!

While winter has come to South Africa, here in Durban we are enjoying another wonderful ‘Second Summer’.

In this edition you can read about the successful World Economic Forum on Africa which we hosted last month and how Durban secured the right to host the Tourism INDABA for the next five years!

Amongst other stories, we share news of our Clean Audit, our financial results, and the highlights of the economic impact which the Durban ICC has contributed in the past year.

From a CSI perspective, you can read about how we gave a little back to our community as part of the Take a Girl Child to Work initiative.

Our other stories include recent accolades like our Chefs being invited to cater for the Ambassador’s Freedom Day celebrations in Cote d’Ivoire and scooping the Vision 2030 awards in June.

We also have a host of wonderful events to look forward to in the next few months. These include the Wonderful World of Disney on Ice, Trevor Noah, and Prof. Mervyn King’s workshop on good corporate governance.

Finally, on behalf of the Durban ICC Team, I would like to thank all our clients and stakeholders for your ongoing support and partnership. We look forward to moving to even greater heights together in the months ahead.

SERVICES

Convention Meeting Halls

The Durban ICC is one of the most flexible and versatile venues in the world. Thanks to the Centre’s intelligent design and operable walls, it offers an almost unlimited number of venue configurations available to our clients.

Its main convention area of 11,600m² can be opened up to form one enormous venue or subdivided using operable walls into 22 separate convention halls of various sizes.

Hall 1, or affectionately known as the Hall of Stars, because of its intelligent lighting system, offers event organisers the choice of either a magnificent auditorium seating 1,680 delegates or, with the raked tribune seating raised into the ceiling, a traditional flat-floor convention hall of 1,448m². This hall can also be divided down the middle in either flat-floor or raked auditorium seating styles.

All the convention halls are multi-purpose venues, equally suitable for conferences and meetings as they are for exhibitions and banquets. The halls are air-conditioned, carpeted and offer complimentary Wi-Fi connectivity. The full venue can accommodate 12,000 delegates for a plenary session or a banquet of up to 5,000 guests. The centre provides a spacious concourse running the entire length of the building, flanked by a glass facade which floods the building with natural light. The concourse can also open up onto three courtyard areas ideal for outside catering or just enjoying the wonderful sunny Durban weather.

The Centre provides loading docks on the same level as the convention halls, making it a breeze for build-up and break-down of exhibition stands. The loading dock doors are over six-metres in height, allowing for large-scale stages and rigging to be brought in. Halls 1 – 3 also offer a ceiling height of 10-metres and a height of 12-metres in Halls 4 – 6.

The Durban ICC Arena, comprised of Halls 4 – 6, offers the versatility of being booked as either a conventional meeting hall or as an indoor entertainment and sporting arena. The Durban ICC Arena can accommodate concerts of between 3,000 and 10,000 fans and has full technical capacity for live broadcasts as well as house lighting suitable for TV production filming. There are four on-site generators which can fully power the Centre in the event of power disruptions.

All the convention halls are also equipped with service panels every six metres, providing easy access to electricity supply points avoiding the need to run cables across the venue floor. Three Executive Conference Suites overlook the convention halls via glass partitions and are available as organisers’ offices, VIP holding rooms or media offices.

Ideal for smaller meetings or conferences, the Durban ICC offers four Meeting Rooms which can be booked individually or as breakaway rooms for larger events. The meeting rooms are also versatile in design and can be further sub-divided into smaller venues using the operable walls.

All the Meeting Rooms are equipped with automated presentation screens and top of the line drop-down data-projectors. The Meeting Rooms are air-conditioned and offer full, complimentary Wi-Fi connectivity. They also equipped with service panels in the floor every three metres, providing easy access to electricity supply points avoiding the need to run cables across the venue floor.

Two Meeting Rooms are provided on the ground floor and are accessible from the main concourse. These rooms can be subdivided into five smaller rooms each or used in a number of other configurations, thanks to the operable walls in the venues. The venue sizes range from 65m² to 370m².

These rooms are also extremely popular as catering venues for larger events as they can open up onto the outdoor courtyard areas offering delegates an outdoor dining experience and a taste of the balmy Durban climate.

An additional two meeting rooms are available on the upper level and each can be partitioned into seven separate venues ranging in size from 45m² to 362m².

Each of these suites is fully equipped with boardroom table and executive conference chairs, automated screens, ceiling-mounted data-projectors and excellent audio. These venues also offer air-conditioning, a tea/coffee and refreshment station and complimentary Wi-Fi connectivity.

Outdoor Event Space

Why not take advantage of Durban’s warm, subtropical climate and enjoy your event outdoors? With an average of 320 glorious, sunny days a year, and 1,500m² of courtyard space, the Durban ICC is the ideal venue for an outdoor event.

The Fig Tree Courtyard is a beautiful paved courtyard with adjoining lawn area ideal for cocktail parties, banquets or small weddings. The Durban ICC also offers three additional courtyards, easily accessed from the main concourse, where delegates can enjoy the open air and dine al fresco.

Our culinary team offers full food and beverage catering service in the courtyards and nothing beats a traditional South African braai (barbecue) under the stars.
