Highover Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the scenic Hele Hele (Hella Hella) route between Richmond and Donnybrook. The nature reserve straddles the Mkomazi River, and has approx 11km of river frontage. Highover is 3 000ha in extent and adjoins the Soada State Forest which comprises approximately 500ha of spectacular mist belt forest.Highover has Natural Heritage Status (Natural Heritage Site No 44) on account of its scenic beauty and numerous rare and endangered plant and animal species. Dramatic landscapes comprising cliffs and mountain tops, waterfalls and rocky river beds, steep forest clad gulleys, rolling plains, clear star strewn night skies and ethereal morning mists combine to make Highover a magnificent destination.Our rustic Bushcamp offers a variety of accommodation to suit your budget from lodge, riverside cottages and chalets to bunkhouses and camping.

Highover is an eco-adventure destination in KwaZulu Natal that offers you an adrenalin rush as you shoot white river rapids, experience the thrill of seeing the endangered blue swallows in flight, opt to enjoy the spectacular indigenous tree trail or relax with a good book.A base from which to explore the Southern Natal Midlands. This might include Sani Pass, trips on the Steam Trains, Byrne Village, the Southern Berg and the Umkomaas Valley.

ACCOMMODATION

All facilities are serviced daily and guests are supplied with a reasonable amount of fire wood and filtered drinking water.

THE LODGE

Offers the visitor accommodation in a very special atmosphere, it sleeps 10 people, is fully equipped, and boasts a unique outdoor bathroom with a spectacular view of the HeleHele Kop. It has its own private boma and spacious lapa.

Rooms:

Double storey with 3 bedrooms upstairs and a bedroom downstairs with bed linen, please bring your own bath and swimming towels. Sleeps 10 - two rooms have a single bed in addition to the double bed. Comfortable living area downstairs with a fireplace for cold winter nights!

Features:

Private Lapa and Boma, open air bathroom with view of the mountains, total privacy and access to all amenities. There is a small dam nearby for game viewing and birding.

Self-Catering:

Fully equipped kitchen. Covered lapa with gas stove and braai area. Supplied with filtered drinking water and 1 crate of fire wood free, thereafter R30.00 per crate.

STONE COTTAGES

Our Riverside Stone Cottages offer comfortable accommodation and are built of stone with a thatch roof, it sleeps 8 people. Each cottage has a unique semi-outdoor shower, basin and toilet. All our cottages has a river view, and each one is private and set among the trees.

2 bedrooms interlinking the central living area.

Features:

Bedrooms have a double bed and bunk beds with bed linen, please bring your own bath towels. Private ablutions with semi-outdoor shower. Basic electricity - lights and a single plug point in each cottage. Paraffin lanterns available on request.

Self-Catering:Own fully equipped kitchen and living area. Fridge and gas stove are provided. Covered braai area. Supplied with filtered drinking water and 1 crate of fire wood free, thereafter R30.00 per crate.

RIVERSIDE CHALETS

Our essentially 'African' Riverside Reed Chalets offer simple but attractive accommodation under a thatch roof, it sleeps 6 people. We have 2 Riverside chalets available. And each chalet has a private setting among the trees.There is a central lapa and viewing deck overlooking the rapids. It gives you a place to truly unwind and relax!

2 bedrooms interlinking the central living area.

Features:

Central ablution / dish washing facilities. Bedrooms have a double and single bed with bed linen, please bring your own bath towels. Basic electricity - lights and a single plug point in each chalet. Paraffin lanterns available on request.

Self-Catering:

Own Fully equipped kitchen, and dining area. Fridge and two plate cooker provided. Covered braai area. Supplied with filtered drinking water and 1 crate of fire wood free, thereafter R30.00 per crate.

BUNKHOUSES

Two stone bunkhouses under thatch roof offer comfortable accommodation with access to the central lapa area and deck overlooking the river.Ideal for large groups, backpackers, families etc.

Rooms:

Each with 2 bedrooms adjacent to each other sleeping a total of 12 and 16 per bunkhouse (3 - 4 bunk beds per bedroom). Bedding provided, please bring your own bath towels.

Features:

Central ablution / dish washing facilities. Basic electricity - lights in each bunkhouse. Paraffin lanterns available on request.

Self-Catering:

Well equipped outdoor and undercover kitchenette with separate braai area. Fridge and gas burners provided. Supplied with filtered drinking water and 1 crate of fire wood free, thereafter R30.00 per crate.

CAMPING

A 20ha river plain has been landscaped with numerous secluded camp sites. Our new camp site situated towards Rapid No.1 that offers campers a quiet sites among the trees.Our riverside camping offers numerous spacious and secluded camp sites under shady trees with spectacular views of the mountains and river. It is common to see impala, bushbuck and ostrich ambling around in the camp area.The new ablution block has hot and cold water available.

Camping:

Numerous spacious camp sites under trees, bring your own tent and camping equipment! We regret we do not have equipment to hire.

Features:

Two central ablution facilities each with hot and cold water. The donkey is used for warm water and on request we will lit the donkey or you can do it by yourself. NO electricity points available.

Self-Catering:

Each camp site has its own braai facility. Supplied with filtered drinking water and 1 crate of fire wood free, thereafter R30.00 per crate.

DAY VISITORS

Please check in at reception on arrival. All day visitors are welcome to spend some time at the river, walk our tree-spotting trails, view game and birds or simply relax outdoors.Bring your picnic basket or braai equipment along and spend a relaxing day down in the Bushcamp or bring along your fishing equipment and catch some fish. (On Yellow fish it is catch and release only) Braai facilities are available and a reasonable amount of fire wood is supplied. We do sell firewood at R30 per crate on request for those would like to stay a little longer.

Group Bookings:

If you would like to book for a big group let us know and we will arrange a large camp section for your group booking, celebration or function. Please request this by contact us when making a booking.
