Ford Motor Company is a global automotive and mobility company based in Dearborn, Michigan. Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has been an active participant in the South African motor industry since 1923 when we began assembling Model T cars in a disused wool shed in Port Elizabeth.
We remain one of Southern Africa’s leading automotive companies. One element of Ford operations throughout the world that continues to stand above all is the brand promise: Go Further. It is a modern interpretation of Henry Ford’s vision to “open the highways to all mankind”.
Ford is helping to realise this vision in Africa today by offering South Africans a full family of smart, safe and economical vehicles, from the entry-level Figo to the pick-up truck benchmark – the Ranger. We also offer a full range of SUVs and light commercial vehicles.
We have grown our family of performance cars with the Fiesta ST and Focus ST and RS, while adding the cherry-on-the top in the form of the iconic Mustang which is available in right-hand drive for the first time in its history, which goes back more than 50 years.
All Ford vehicles offer smart technologies, stylish design, fuel efficiency, safety, service and maintenance excellence at affordable prices, giving drivers peace of mind on the road and in their pockets.
FORD WILDLIFE FOUNDATION
The conservation and preservation of the environment has become a major worldwide issue, dramatically changing the attitudes of consumers and the way large corporations do business.
Against this background the Ford Wildlife Foundation (FWF) was announced in September 2014, funded by the Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa and supported by its nationwide network of Ford Dealers.
The FWF supports environmental education, research and conservation projects around Sub Saharan Africa. The Ford Ranger is used to enable the projects to go further and make a real impact in the communities in which they operate. For further information on the FWF, please email email@example.com.
DRIVING SKILLS FOR LIFE
Established in 2003 by the Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association, and a panel of safety experts created the Ford Driving Skills for Life program (Ford DSFL) which teaches drivers of all ages the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what they learn in standard driving school program.
The program is international in scope touching not only South Africa but many areas around the world. The basic premise behind Ford Driving Skills for Life is to provide a step in the learning process, providing new skills and information not currently shared with newly licensed drivers in the basic driver education courses.
Training is conducted in a hands-on curriculum and the entire program is available free of charge. Training conducted under the Ford Driving Skills for Life program addresses the inexperience factor as well as issues surrounding distracted driving and fuel efficient driving tips. Results over the past ten years of this effort have been outstanding.
Ford DSFL helps drivers improve their skills in four key areas that are critical factors in more than 60% of vehicle crashes including:
- The point of no return
- How to scan for trouble
- Minimizing distractions
- Safety zones
- Minimum vision lead time
- Approaching and turning left at intersection
- Contact road patches
- How acceleration, deceleration, braking and turns affect vehicle balance
- Adjusting to a vehicle's size and weight
- How to recover from skids in front- and rear-wheel drive vehicles
- Maintaining space around, ahead of and behind your vehicle
- Learning how to adjust speed
- Maintaining a safe distance between vehicles
- How to avoid being rear-ended and avoiding a head-on crash
- Driving at a speed that doesn't endanger or impede others
- Using proper signals and covering the brake
- Conventional braking systems versus anti-lock braking (ABS) systems
- Emergency braking techniques
Distracted and Impaired Driving
- Ford DSFL also addresses distracted driving and impaired driving in the hands-on curriculum.
