Jan Hugo was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, on the 1st of February 1991, and started his music tuition in Pretoria at the age of 7, distinguishing himself in local arts-festivals and eisteddfods.

Just 13 years old, Jan was invited to further his studies in Italy and became a student of Francesco Cipolletta and Giuseppe Fausto Modugno at the Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali “Vecchi.Tonelli” in Modena.

He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music in March 2010, obtaining the highest marks possible, cum laude and honorary mention.
