Johannesburg International Mozart Festival

Until Sun, 4th Feb '18 | 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

The Johannesburg International (JOIN) Mozart Festival, or JIMF, has been such an incredible success for the last nine years that the 10th one has been scheduled for 26 January to 4 February 2018. Those with a penchant for classical music and culture will enjoy a week of fantastic concerts and cultural events, with a vibrant "Papageno / Papagena" theme.

This festival style is a welcome change from the more formal style that the classics usually enjoy. And, it is held when the regular subscription series of the local classical music scene winds up for a summer break. So, it is perfect in terms of timing, tone and content.

The JIMF combines world-class classical performances with an innovative and creative approach to programming and outreach projects for children, students and other audiences. This unites music-lovers of all ages, languages and cultures in a dynamic celebration. The connection to Mozart stems from this great musician’s ability to emerge from a tyrannical parent’s influence to becoming one of the greatest composers that the world has ever known. He pushed the boundaries and transformed music from a rigid set of rules into something no-one had seen or heard before.

Today, he remains one of the most loved and respected musicians, which speaks of how his approach to music appeals to listeners and speaks to them in very real, personal ways. So, the JIMG is also about pushing the boundaries, bending the rules, and creating grey areas in which to let creativity bloom. And, in so doing, it piques an interest in the youth of South Africa and creates a platform on which they can speak, create and bloom.
