ABOUT US

Battery Centre is a truly South African battery franchise network with outlets located in all large cities and many towns across the country. We carry a full range of car, truck, leisure, stop/start ready and motorcycle batteries.

At Battery Centre we pride ourselves on conducting thorough and proper free battery checks – we will never sell a battery simply because it is asked for. We strive to ensure our customers’ needs are fully understood and serviced. Our battery fitment is precise and professional.

With many decades of experience as battery specialists, we are capable of checking and fitting a full range of batteries for any vehicle. Through our close association with OEMs in South Africa, we are able to fit batteries that are made in the same factory as those used by most major car manufacturers.

History of Battery Centre

The first Battery Centre was opened in Bloemfontein in 1969. The franchise grew rapidly in popularity as it expanded across South Africa, offering free battery testing and fitment services and becoming the go-to service provider for motorists experiencing car battery problems.

Battery Centre now represents one of the largest single product non-food franchises in South Africa, and the Battery Centre name is synonymous with outstanding service that motorists can rely upon wherever they travel. There are more than 120 Battery Centre outlets across the length and breadth of the country, from Polokwane to Cape Town and Springbok to Durban.

Battery Centre’s commitment to the environment

Recycling is an extremely important consideration for Battery Centre, not only for the recovery of valuable materials, but also for the on-going protection of the environment.

Automotive battery components, which include lead, plastic and acid are harmful to our environment if they are not properly treated. Fortunately, most of the components of these batteries are well suited to recycling.

Battery Centre’s parent company, First National Battery, established a recycling facility in Benoni some years ago to reduce the risk of polluting our environment, prevent waste and to control the quality of lead being used to create new batteries. This recycling facility includes a battery breaker, an effluent plant that treats the acid, a lead smelter, a blending kettle to produce specialised alloys and scrubbers to control environmental emissions. Recently a plastic reprocessing plant has been commissioned, thereby completing the entire reprocessing cycle.

A key concern in SA is the importation of lead acid batteries by organisations (or businesses) that do not have any recycling measures in place. Unlike local manufacturers, these importers do not share the same sense of responsibility to protect the local environment. As a result, First National Battery actively looks for scrap lead acid batteries, not just their own, to recycle.
